You’ve seen the Just Married flip flops, right? Does the idea of wearing flip flops to a wedding gross you out? What about wearing flip flops to your own wedding? Honestly, when I first heard about bridal flip flops, I was quite turned off by the idea. I didn’t think any bride in her sane mind would want to wear “just” a flip flop to attend a wedding, more so, wear one to her wedding day! But then when I saw the logic behind wearing wedding flip flops, and saw how elegant the designs can be, I got into thinking that I should have thought about wearing an elegant flip flop myself when I got married!

A wedding is the most important day to a bride-to-be, yes. Much has been said about it being the day when the bride looks her most beautiful, and how she should savor the moment that will be captured and remembered for the rest of her life. The truth is it is also one of the most exhaustive days for the bride. The wedding ceremony itself, the wedding reception, and the dance party that usually lasts well into the night, can take a toll to anybody, much more so if you’re the bride who’s wearing those oh-so-elegant but oh-so-uncomfortable high heels. The phrase “vanity over comfort” was coined for this type of occasions, indeed.

And so this is where the logic behind wearing bridal flip flops comes in. Brides don’t have to suffer silently throughout her wedding day. For some brides whose focal point is the flowing dress she’s wearing, she opts for a comfortable wedge-shaped flip flop to wear underneath, because these can’t be seen anyway.

Or perhaps she just wears the formal ladies shoes to the actual ceremony, then changes into the more comfortable (but still elegant) flip flops during the reception party. Or nervous brides who fear of tripping while walking down the aisle will also prefer wearing a comfortable foot wear such as a flip flop over formal shoes. Still others just prefer to match their wedding dress with a “glammed up” flip flop, especially if the location is a bit less formal than a church wedding, such as a beach or garden wedding.

Flip flops can be designed anyway you want to, be it with high heels, or in platform wedges, or beaded with the same trimmings as your wedding gown. My personal favorite, though, is a slim designed flip flop with white or ivory straps with platform heels. The white ivory flip flops certainly look formal enough to wear to a church, but more importantly, feels very comfortable as well.

Some will still argue that a wedding flip flop simply has no place in a formal church wedding. Again, I would agree to some extent, but not totally because it all depends on the type of wedding dress of the bride and the over-all design of the flip flop.

A beach wedding is where bridal flip flops become a very fitting foot wear, not only for the bride, but for the whole entourage as well. No use wearing formal high heels, since these will just sink into the sand anyway. The relaxing backdrop of the blue sea, the cool breeze, the vibrant clouds and the setting (or riding) sun, all make for a very comfortable wedding, and wearing of flip flop is quite appropriate.

But when you have everything planned out; from the gown to the food on the table, make sure you consider what to wear on your feet. After all, tripping on the sand or grass can ruin the whole affair, not to mention that bridal gown you’re planning on keeping for years. High heeled shoes like stilettos dig into the dirt or sand making it hard to walk. Even with carpets and other forms of covering laid out, it might be better to look for a more appropriate type of footwear.

That’s why it’s a bit more practical to look for wedding flip flops and other beach footwear. They are mostly flat soled, so you won’t trip. If you need those extra inches then plat formed sandals/flip flops can work. Unlike some shoes, they also do not have recesses which can gather pebbles and sand, which can make standing uncomfortable. No matter what your theme is; whether it’s a casual event, or a more formal one, there’s sure to be a flip flop that can suit the occasion.

If you need footwear with a more formal look, there are ivory or white wedding flip flops. You can choose floral designs to make the theme fit the resort or beach. Or you can probably use crystals for your bridal flip flops. Swarovski crystals, diamonds or diamond alternatives such as cubic zirconia and moissanite can be used to add to provide a bit of glamour. Colored crystals like rubies and emeralds (or their alternatives) can be matched with what color motif you chose for the wedding. You can also look for beaded or sequined sandals, definitely a more affordable alternative, but not that less glamorous.

If the occasion is a more casual one (think luau themed) then there shouldn’t be a problem looking for the proper designs. But even beach wear can be turned into a statement. There are the usual floral designs with a twist. Some flip flops have the words “Just Married” printed along with the floral design.

There’re also interesting ways to show people that you’re newly weds outside of the wedding. Flip flops containing a mirrored engraving of “Just” on the sole of the left foot and “Married” on the right leave “Just Married” footprints on the wet sand (or muddy statements on restaurant floors if you forget to wipe them).

Don’t leave your bridesmaids out on the fun though. Getting them colored sandals that match your motif can be a simple way to say “Thank you for being there”. A practical wedding souvenir they can use on a daily basis after the event is over.
