Formal Wedding Hairstyles: Which to Choose?

Brides love the dresses, the flowers, the makeup. But nothing is more fun than a formal wedding hairstyle. While a formal hairstyle may sound a little stuffy, it is anything but. This is a time where the bride gets to experiment with color, styles, and accessories for the formal wedding hair.

Most young ladies have a stylist in mind when considering the formal hairstyle, but if the bride has no hair stylist loyalty and wants to shop around, a few tips to help her are suggested. Choose a stylist who possibly specializes in wedding hairstyles or one who has done lots of hair styles for weddings. Ask if he or she will be available on the big day.

Try out some of his or her hairstyles in advance. Don’t wait until the day of the wedding to decide on a hairstyle. Ask friends and family for suggestions. Try out more than one stylist. This can be time consuming, but it can also be lots of fun. And remember this is a once in a lifetime experience. Every bride wants to look her absolute best.

Another important consideration: just because a formal wedding hairstyle looks great on one bride, doesn’t mean it will look just as nice on another bride. Try out the hairstyle first before making a decision. Face shapes and hair color and texture play an important role when determining the best wedding hairstyle. Wedding hairstyles should never be cookie cutter do’s. Each bride is an individual and there is a wedding hairstyle to meet the bride’s individual needs.

Hair color certainly plays a big part in the formal wedding hairstyle. This is not a time to get overly creative. Colors such as pink, green, purple, and red red are off limits. The focus of the wedding day should not be hair color.

If a bride walks down the aisle sporting purple locks, then the talk will be not how beautiful she looks, but did you see her hair. And believe me, it won’t be a complimentary conversation. It will be a what was she thinking conversation.

So let’s get down to brass tacks and talk about some of those hairstyles. The first choice of many brides for a formal wedding hairstyle is the updo. Simply put, the hair is up on the head. There are hundreds of variations of the updo. Its location can be high up on the head, it can in the middle, or it can be at the nape of the neck. The updo is an elegant and formal wedding hairstyle worn by many many brides.

The wedding hairstyle, the updo, can be half up with curls gently caressing the bride’s face. The updo can be very curly and piecey. Long strands of curly hair flowing around the bride’s face. The updo can have a messy look, but not too messy because it is a formal in nature.

The updo, can be worn with bangs or not, depending on the shape of the bride’s face. There are those very high, very fancy updo’s that bring back memories of the 60′s. It is an elegant look, but somewhat dated. But there are some brides who can pull off the formal style.

Another version of the updo is the chignon, which means in French “the nape of the neck.” The chignon is a knot of hair worn at the back of the head and especially at the nape of the neck. It is quite fancy and a definite formal wedding hairstyle.

The chignon does however have more of a contemporary look than the very high, very fancy 60′s updo’s. This hairstyle is often worn by Hollywood stars on the red carpet. A thick full head of hair is just right for this hairstyle, but extensions and hairpieces are helpful if needed.

Long, elegant hair is perfect for a a wedding. Why shouldn’t a bride want to show off her mane on the most important day of her life. Long hair can be luxuriously straight, wavy, curly, pulled back, or a combination of those. Long hair is glamorous, soft, and sexy and and a variety of lengths make it the hairstyle of any bride’s dream.

Don’t count out short hair either? Short hair fits right in when it comes to hairstyles choices for weddings. Short hair gives an air of sweetness and sophistication when paired with flowers or tiaras. Short hair for a wedding has an innocent look, yet it is considered a formal wedding hairstyle. A beautiful wedding hairstyle, I might add.

To all brides out there, have a good time when deciding on that perfect do for the perfect day. Whatever formal wedding hairstyle you choose, let it define who you are, and what you want your wedding day to be. Remember the song “Hair.” Your wedding day and your hairstyle should be just as much fun as the song.
