The key to wearing a dress for a wedding is coordination with the rest of the wedding especially for a member of the entourage or host family. As for the mother of the groom, keeping it simple and low key is best but it does not mean a pale and unattractive dress. It may not be the grooms’ mother to shine but it’s still a very special moment. Mother of the groom dresses are traditionally bought or decided on after talking to the mother of the bride and knowing what she has gotten to wear for the wedding. This is to make sure that both mothers end up wearing similarly formal wedding outfits. Remember that the key is coordination and not to exactly match.
Matching the Brides Mother
The mother of the groom dress color has to coordinate with the wedding color scheme as well but not exactly having the same color as the bridesmaids, unless the bride requested for it. Also make sure that the grooms mother does not come in the same fabric and color as the table linens and draperies.
The mother of the groom gown or dress must be sensitive to the choice of the mother of the bride. Clashing with the color scheme and overdressing must be avoided.
Colors
White and ivory may not be a very good choice (unless again the bride requests) especially if it is cut in a way that it tends to resemble the brides wedding gown. Upstaging the bride is not very good at all.
Black is discouraged in most weddings as it has been associated with mourning, unless the couple has decided on a black and white color scheme as more and more modern brides has opted for.
Red is considered too flashy and may not work well with being low key and simple.
Wearing Pants and other styles
Pants are acceptable alternatives just as long as they are not too casual. Pants may be cut from elegant fabrics the color of the wedding motif and fashioned and cut in a formal designs. Tailored and flared cuts worn with stilettos are great for young conservative mothers of grooms –to –be. Stilettos may not be very good for older mothers though a wide array of nice looking and comfortable shoes are available.
The venue and type of the must be considered as well. Beach weddings of course do not necessitate the wearing of floor length gowns and shoe with heels. A dress cut somewhere below the knees might be good but avoid wearing a strappy attire if the bride is wearing something less revealing. And a flat thong sandals or pretty slippers would be good. Sand is easy on the feet when inside close shoes.
Formal wedding and sit down dinner venues require formal dresses. A floor length gown is appropriate, just remember to choose a color other than white, cream or ivory to leave the lime light to the bride and black being the color of mourning may stir up a controversy.
Accessories
Pearls are great for mothers on weddings. A pearl earring matched with a pearl bracelet will be very nice (but not if the bride is wearing pearls!) A matching set of jewelries in thin gold chains for necklace and bracelets is also good. Just always remember not to be flashy.
Big gems may not be a very good idea especially if the bride is wearing simple pieces of jewelry. And do not over do it. Choose between a heavy earring and a thick necklace or chocker. Never wear both. Just leave the watch at home unless it is the fashion kind designed for formal occasions.
